Hello ASHRAE Saskatoon,

I am excited to hear Greg speak on refrigeration at this meeting.  Greg knows a number of things on a number of topics (for example, ask him about wood stoves) and it is good to hear something specifically on refrigerants.  I remember being asked in an interview what my favourite refrigerant was and I did not have a favourite yet.  Maybe Greg will give me some ideas.

I just found out that there is an ASHRAE Saskatoon history document that goes from 1987 to 1992, submitted to ASHRAE HQ by Darell Solie.  (I am working on scanning the 1966 to 1988 history binder.)  I am excited.

Since Greg is speaking on refrigeration, I thought I would see what I could find.  The first mention of refrigeration that I found in our Saskatoon chapter's history was that on October 17, 1972, Bob Allen of the University of Saskatchewan spoke on the U of S refrigeration course offered by the Extension Division.  (Professor George Green spoke on the U of S Air Conditioning course on September 27, 1967.)  ASHRAE has not always been ASHRAE and the "R" for Refrigerating is relatively new.  I had heard of ASHVE (with the "V" standing for Ventilating), but did not know that ASHVE became ASHAE.  "ASHRAE was formed as the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers by the merger in 1959 of American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE) founded in 1894 and The American Society of Refrigerating Engineers (ASRE) founded in 1904." (from https://www.ashrae.org/about-ashrae/ashrae-and-industry-history)  Since the "R" has been there for more than 50 years, refrigeration is an important part of ASHRAE.

Our ASHRAE Saskatoon Facebook page is doing surprisingly well.  When I posted this month's announcement to Facebook, the number of likes was 231.

If you have any ASHRAE history questions for me, then please let me know.
