February is here already, it has been an exciting year this far wth only 3 monthly chapter meetings to go (excluding our annual golf tournament). This brings up the time of year where we will be looking for people to take an active role within the Saskatoon ASHRAE Board. Nominations will open at our next meeting for the 4 elected positions; President, Vice-president, Treasurer, and Secretary. I encourage everyone to attend and nominate from our current board or anyone who may be interested in becoming a Saskatoon ASHRAE Chapter Board member.

Well the end of another calendar year is fast approaching and our ASHRAE year is well under way. To date we have had great monthly meetings with average attendance. It’s time to take a break from our usual monthly meetings and technical presentations. December marks our annuals Past President’s Night. This is an evening for social gathering and pool night. I encourage members to attend the evening’s events. Reconnect with old friends and colleagues and to show your appreciation for the time and dedication our Past Presidents have put into our Local Saskatoon Chapter of ASHRAE.
Next month we have the honor of the ASHRAE President, Ron Jarnagin being in attendance. The January meeting will take place on Monday January 9th. Mark that date into your calendar for a record setting attendance at our next meeting. Show you interest and commitment to ASHRAE by attending the meetings.
Finally I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you and your families a very warm and joyous holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Last month was a well attended Research Promotion Night with VIPs from our ASHRAE region and the society level. Our November meeting is Membership Promotion Night ($10 for non-members) and Student Night ($5 for students), so feel free to invite others. This is all for the President’s report. |

Attendance on last month’s meeting was good for our first monthly meeting of the year. Thanks to Chris for finding a speaker with short notice and may thanks to Shawn Wedewer and Chris James from SRC for their great presentation on Micro Combined Heat and Power technology.
This month promises to be another eventful meeting with what looks like a very informative presentation on BIM. Our speaker for the evening, Dennis Knight is an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecture (DL) along with being ASHRAE Society Research Promotion Chair, he will be joined by Ray Sieber from Regina Chapter who is the Regional Vice-Chair of research Promotion.
As an added bonus, Erich Binder from Calgary Chapter will also join us. Erich is our regions Director & Regional Chair (DRC). Other regional officers attending will be Bill Dean, Regional Historian and Rob Craddock, Regional Treasurer
We are hopeful for another large turnout for the evening. See you there.

I am honored and excited to be serving the Saskatoon Chapter as President for 2011-2012 year. I have been a member of ASHRAE Society and the local Saskatoon Chapter since 2001. I have been on the Board of Governors from 2003 in various roles most notably as membership chair. Thru the years I have been given the opportunity to participate in ASHRAE at both the local and regional level which has granted me with many valuable experiences. This year as your President will be another great experience.
I would first like to thank outgoing Chapter President, Jonathan Bushman, for his hard work and dedication to the Chapter. Jonathan’s role on the Board is not over yet, as he assumes the role of Research Promotion Chair for the 2011-2012 campaign. You can expect to hear from Jonathan as he raises funds for ASHRAE Research on behalf of the Saskatoon Chapter. Remember money raised in Canada, stays in Canada.
As the incoming President, my goal is to continue to strengthen our local Chapter, thru membership involvement. Our current Board of Governors is knowledgeable and has many years of experience. I am pleased to announce we also have 3 new additions to the Board to serve as members-at-large. Kirk Nagus with Axiom Industries, Jesse Friggstad with Keywest Engineering, and Deanna Astill a student with the University of Saskatchewan.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to this year’s Board of Governors. - Chris Watt, President Elect; Programs Chair
- Blake Erb, Chapter Treasurer; CTTC Chair
- Michael Nemeth, Chapter Secretary, Webpage/Newsletter
- Ryan McGillivray, Membership Promotion
- Jonathan Bushman, Resource Promotion; Awards
- Jack Scott, Chapter Historian
- Greg Scrivener, Student Activities
- Manfred Gerber, Refrigeration Chair
- Kirk Campbell, Webpage/Newsletter (taking over from Michael Nemeth)
- Kirk Nagus, Member-at-Large
- Jesse Friggstad, Member-at-Large
- Deanna Astill, Member-at-Large; Student Liason
Our Programs chair has been working hard and we are fortunate to have three Distinguished Lectures booked for the upcoming year including a visit by the ASHRAE Society President, Ron Jarnagin. This will mark the 4th year running for the ASHRAE Society President to visit our chapter.
I would like encourage our Chapter Members to forward any questions, comments and provide feedback to the Board to ensure the local ASHRAE Chapter is meeting your expectations.
We’ll that’s all I have for now. Hope to see as many as possible on our kick-off meeting September 13.

Hello everyone,
Well, my year as ASHRAE Saskatoon chapter president is nearly over. It’s been fun being the figurehead while other folks did the real work. I would like to thank Chris Watt for his work as treasurer, dealing with roughly two years worth of numbers. I would like to thank Jeff Frie for stepping into the VP / programs chair role and organizing our speakers. When Andrew Thomson passed away, we lost a good friend. Jeff and Chris helped the chapter with the practical work side of Andrew’s passing. I would also like to thank everyone on the board of governors and everyone that helped make this year for ASHRAE Saskatoon a success. I would like to thank Ronn LePage for the VerEco Home tour and all of our speakers for their presentations. Jeff Frie will be leading the Saskatoon chapter next year and I think he will do a great job and has already represented us well at the 2011 Region XI CRC (Chapter Regional Conference) in this past May.
I would like to congratulate the 2011 golf tournament winners. Evan Olfert and Chris Watt each won a longest drive hole. There were two systems to determine lowest score with Jeff Gerhardt winning one way, then Dallas Skifton winning the other. Rob Craddock, Doug Freeman, Manfred Gerber, and Jack Scott won the big random draw prizes. Thank you golf committee for organizing this tournament.

Hello everyone,
The vote is coming! At our April meeting, the Saskatoon chapter of ASHRAE will be voting for our new President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary. If anyone is interesting in joining the ASHRAE Saskatoon chapter board of governors (or you have an idea of who might be interested), then please come talk to me or another member of the board. This is a great way to get involved and help promote HVAC&R learning. At the March meeting, we nominated a few people, but not enough to fill the positions, so please consider joining the chapter board.
For the last meeting of the year, we have Dan O’Brian coming to talk to us about kitchen ventilation. See the programs part of the newsletter for more information.
This year, the Saskatoon chapter of ASHRAE had a competition for the Chapter Technology Award. The 2011 ASHRAE Saskatoon Chapter Technology Award winner is the VerEco Home, submitted by Kelly Winder and Ronn LePage. ASHRAE Saskatoon got a chance to tour the VerEco Home at our last meeting and now it won the Chapter Technology Award. Congratulations!
ASHRAE is once again having their free webcast. This time the topic for the April 21 is “Ground Source Heat Pump Systems: Putting the Earth to Work for You”. You can watch this three-hour free webcast from your computer or join some follow ASHRAE Saskatoon members to watch it together over a pizza lunch. (There will be a small cost to cover the food.) Details on the gathering will be coming shortly. Information on the webcast itself can be found at www.ashrae.org/ghpwebcast.

Saskatoon and Saskatchewan have had their share of building science innovations and for our March meeting, ASHRAE Saskatoon is touring an example: the VerEco Home at the Western Development Museum (WDM). Some friends and I got a chance to tour the house last year and it was a surprisingly good tour. There was a lot to learn within the space of that house. Note that we will be having supper at the Park Town Hotel, then carpooling over to the WDM.
The Saskatoon chapter is having a Chapter Technology Award competition for HVAC&R design projects. The deadline in March 15, so please see the announcement for more information.

Hello everyone,
It’s student night and membership promotion night and we have an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer as well! When I was in Edmonton for the 2008 ASHRAE Region XI CRC (Chapter Regional Conference), Tim McGinn was one of the presenters for the Technical Sessions and now he is coming as a Distinguished Lecturer to talk to us about applying European HVAC technologies here. This should be a good presentation, so come and join us for Membership Promotion and Student Night. Invite your friends. Membership Promotion and Student Night is only $10 for non-members and $5 for students.
I would like to congratulate Mr. Jonathan Wiebe for winning the ASHRAE Saskatoon chapter design award for the College of Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. He is in his fourth year of the Mechanical Engineering program. The ASHRAE Saskatoon chapter also has a scholarship for Kelsey SIAST, but I do not think that has been awarded yet.
Back in December, our chapter had the Past Presidents’ Social and Pool Night. Jack Scott and Mike Osborn were the winning team. Congratulations.
