Regular Meeting Minutes for ASHRAE Saskatoon Chapter 102
  1. Call to Order
    1. Jeff Frie called to order the regular meeting of the Saskatoon ASHRAE Chapter at 6:40 pm on November 8, 2011 at the Parktown Hotel.
  2. Introductions / Attendance
  3. Reading of minutes from last meeting
    1. Mike Nemeth read the October 11, 2011 meeting minutes. 
    2. Motion to accept the meeting minutes as amended. (Blake Erb / Jack Scott).
    3. Passed unanimously.
  4. Reports
    1. Vice-President / Programs – Chris Watt
      1. November 8 – DL Paul L. Pieper, Venmar CES Inc. Topic: Meeting and Exceeding High Performance Standards, Codes and Guidelines with Air-to-Air Energy Recovery Systems and Equipment
      2. December 13 – Past President Pool Night 
      3. January 9 (Monday Meeting) – ASHRAE President Ron Jarnagin
      4. February 13 – Open (Monday meeting so its not on Valentine's days)
      5. March 13 - Peter Simmonds DL - High Performance Buildings and Occupant Comfort
      6. April 10 – Open
      7. May – ASHRAE Golf Tournament 
      8. He is working with ABB to bring someone out in Feb for VFD's and their operation and why we see high amperage and high voltage readings at the motors.
    2. Treasurer – Blake Erb
      1. Balances reported.
    3. History – Jack Scott
      1. Edmonton has invited all the prairie chapters to the John Ross Curling Tournament.
      2. There is some interest.
    4. Research Promotion – Jonathan Bushman
      1. Research money fuels HVAC research
      2. Saskatoon is a part of ASHRAE research
        1. Mohammad Rasouli - $10,000 Grant In Aid in 2010
        2. Blake Erb – memorial scholarship, $10,000 Grant In Aid (a few years earlier)
      3. Thanks to PEAK Mechanical, first 2011-2012 donor
      4. $855 raised so far
      5. $9500 goal
    5. Membership Promotion – Ryan MacGillivray
      1. Welcome to all new and potential members, and all the student members.
      2. New members in the past year are:

Benefits of ASHRAE membership include: Job opportunities, Leadership Development, Training, Certification, Professional development, Personal development, Prospective employees, Social gatherings, Networking, Research opportunities, Fundraising, Handbook, Journals, Access to the latest and best technical information, Travel, Conferences, On-line training, Professional certification.  If you didn’t know of some of these benefits or would like more info, please tale to me.
      4. Rosters are available for pick-up.  Thank you to Cypress Sales Partnership, Daniels-Wingerak Engineering Ltd., Ecco Supply, HVAC Sales (1997) Ltd., Johnson Controls LP, March Consulting Associates Inc., Polar Refrigeration Services Ltd.
      5. Society membership dues have increased to $185.  This does not include our local dues or the local meal plan.
      6. New members since July get a 12-month subscription to the AHSRAE Handbook online.
      7. We currently have a few delinquent members -  If your membership was due over the summer, please renew.  I will be contacting everyone soon as a reminder.
      8. If you have over 12 years of experience in AHSRAE, you may be able to be upgraded from an Associate Member to a Member.  If you think you qualify, please let me know.
      9. If there are any membership issues I can help you with, please let me know.
    6. Student Activites – Greg Scrivener
      1. Tonight is the first student night.  Thank you to all students who came out.
      2. We are strongly encouraging ASHRAE members participate in K-12 science and math programs and events.  I hope you take advantage of any opportunities you have to do class presentations or participate in programming like science fairs.  Please let me know if you have any involvement with these types of events or if you know of opportunities but aren’t able to participate yourself.
      3. ASHRAE has started a program this year to help student members and student chapters in developing economies by collecting and donating HVAC/R related books.  Please bring any of your unwanted HVAC textbooks to a monthly meeting or contact me to make other arrangements.
    7. Chapter Technology Transfer – Blake Erb
      1. Vote for a fundamentals course online resulted in Water Systems Design.
    8. Refrigeration – Manfred Gerber
      1. No report.
    9. Awards - Jonathan Bushman
      1. No report.
    10. Webpage / Newsletter – Mike Nemeth & Kirk Campbell
